'Eulogy' is an oil painting created to reflect on to the aftermath of the bushfires in Australia in 2019. The devastation and loss of the fires, combined with the death of my father. Political issues around climate change, social inequalities, our shared complicity in this complete devastation. A wasteland of ash, a cry in the dark for all the flora and fauna burned in these fires. Speaking to an ambiguity around the foreground and background, are we looking from a forest into the light or is it ash hovering amidst the darkness. A void. A questioning of self.
Reverie on entropy. Dematerialising my oil painting. Limited edition print run of 20.
Captures the moment of metamorphosis where liquids dissolve into atmosphere, echoes of light.

This painting, is the culmination of two years developing a technique and style. It’s currently having a holiday at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, Solo 45 show. Keeping within the realms of realism yet fracturing the paint to give the sensation of churning clouds and echoes of light.
